Speaker Bios
Dr Veline L’Esperance is an academic GP and Senior Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London, where she co-leads Black Health Legacy, funded by a Wellcome Trust Discovery Award. This landmark study aims to become the UK’s largest health research initiative dedicated to understanding diseases disproportionately affecting Black communities.
She also serves as Senior Clinical Advisor in Genomics and Precision Medicine for the NHS Race and Health Observatory, contributing expertise to shape national strategy on equity in emerging fields of healthcare.
Her research integrates clinical, public health, and community perspectives, working with general practitioners, public contributors, and voluntary sector partners to ensure findings are grounded in lived experience. Veline has developed innovative approaches to engage underrepresented populations, particularly in urban and marginalised settings, helping shift UK research towards more inclusive practice.
Dr. Bilal Mateen is the Executive Director of Digital Square at PATH. Bilal is a physician by training, with an academic interest in health-related applications of data science and machine learning. He holds an honorary professorial appointment at University College London, and clinical data science fellowship at the Alan Turing Institute – the UK’s national institute for data science and AI. He served as the clinical technology lead, and senior manager for digital technology at the Wellcome Trust, where his team worked on funding digital public goods and the software infrastructure that underpins the science to address three key health challenges: mental health, the impacts of climate change on human health, and emerging & escalating infectious diseases.
Huge thanks to our hosts, the Harley Street Health District, and Hale House – the district’s new home for HealthTech innovators for helping make this event series possible.
