(S)ex Machina: Should digital technology play a part in our sexual health? (London)

Sex. Sexuality. Sex positivity. Safe sex. Feeling sexy. These are all crucial areas of our physical and mental health but should we be using digital tools to keep our sexual health in working order? 

One HealthTech invites you to an evening where we’ll be asking an amazing line up of speakers this question - should digital technology play a part in our sexual health? 

We’ll be examining how digital tech innovation is transforming the way we manage our sexual health, the way we feel and talk about it, and what happens when we’re between the sheets (alone or with company). 

With leading voices in women’s health, sexuality and technology, we’re asking the difficult questions, the awkward questions and the ones you might not expect. All this will be followed by some drinks and nibbles, provided by our lovely friends at Pivotal Software and a chance to network with all the other awesome healthtechies!

Dr Paula Baraitser - Consultant in Sexual Health, King’s College Hospital/Clinical Director, SH:24 | @sh24_nhs

Paula is a consultant in sexual health at King’s College Hospital and co-founder and clinical director of the online sexual health service, SH:24.  She has spent the last five years delivering and researching online sexual health services.

Alma Ramirez-Acosta - Co-Founder and CEO, Vibio | @alma_rac & @myvibio

Alma is CEO and co-founder of Vibio, a sextech start-up creating innovative sex toys that challenge people to explore their pleasure. Their mission is to present pleasure in a natural way, so as to encourage everyone to feel comfortable with themselves and their sexuality. Alma is highly passionate about new technologies and their potential to increase sexual wellbeing, a taboo subject that affects everyone's lives but is rarely spoken about. 

Hoda Ali – Community Outreach Manager and anti-FGM activist | @HodoMAli 

Hoda Ali is a nurse and a human rights activist. She underwent female genital mutilation (FGM) in Somalia at the age of seven, resulting in lifelong consequences, including losing the ability to have children. She draws on her own experiences and professional skills to campaign to defend the rights of girls and to end FGM. 

As part of this work, she co-founded the Vavengers, an FGM awareness-raising charity and is also a trustee for 28TooMany, a charity established to undertake research and provide knowledge and tools to those working to end FGM worldwide. She has appeared in 'The Cruel Cut', a BAFTA-nominated Channel 4 documentary about FGM, as well as the documentary film “100 Vaginas” about the work of photographer Laura Dodsworth aiming to debunk notions of shame around women's bodies. 

Hoda currently leads a ground-breaking project to end FGM in London Perivale Primary School with Ealing Council, involving children, parents and staff. The project has now been rolled out to 16 schools was recently showcased in parliament and in recognition of its success. 

She has also been nominated as an Amnesty International Human Rights Defender and appears on the Suffragette Spirit Map. 

Dr Achyuta V Nori - Consultant GU/ Sexual & Reproductive Health/HIV physician | @AchyutaNori

Achyuta is the NIHR South London Clinical Research Network STI research champion. He leads a Care Redesign programme which is a patient-staff co-design initiative to deliver personalised and holistic accessible sexual health and is exploring digital/technology opportunities to complement traditional healthcare. In his free time, he is completing his PhD thesis and loves opera.

Dr Leila CG Frodsham is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Specialist in Psychosexual Medicine, BMS Accredited Menopause Sub Specialist and Medical Lead for Natility. Leila has worked in both Gynaecology and Psychosexual Medicine for over twenty years and as a consultant for 10. Her special interests lie with sexual pain disorders (including vulvodynia and vaginismus), tocophobia (morbid fear of childbirth), sexuality and fertility, vulval dermatoses, menopause and ejaculatory disorders in men. Her research was in Mother to Embryo Viral (HIV) Transmission risk in Assisted Conception. She is passionate about the destigmatisation of sexual difficulties and education for health care professionals (at under and postgraduate levels) in the area to make disclosure by those affected easier.  She is on the advisory panel for the Vagina Museum, Ex offcia chair, programme secretary and media spokesperson for the Institute of Psychosexual Medicine and a Spokesperson for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. She is widely published both in peer-reviewed journals, podcasts and in the popular media.

She has recorded podcasts for The Guardian and The BMJ and has published a number of books, including: An introduction to Psychosexual Medicine - edited by Pippa Brough and Margaret Denman, The Female Mind RCPsych, Biopsychosocial Obstetrics and Gynaecology, BSPOG, Ten Teachers in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Latest Edition. 

Virginia Sofia Cerrone - Co-founder and CMO, Pureeros | @CerroneVirginia @Pureeros 

Cofounder of pureeros, a platform for women's sexual wellness, and Forbes featured female founder “breaking barriers in sexual wellness”, Virginia made the first ever crowdfunding campaign from the Sexual Wellness industry on Crowdcube. "Pleasure is health" advocate. Editor in Chief of Pureeros Edit - mag dedicated to women’s sexuality.

Accessibility

We have a little fund to make our events more accessible (woop woop!)

If for any reason there are barriers to engaging in the community we invite anyone to apply for up to £30 (but ask for more if you need, worth a try) per person per event to cover personal costs to improve this. The money can cover just about anything, including but not limited to child/other care, taxis if travelling around is tricky, trains if you live out in the countryside, a live-captioner, recording of the event or loss of earnings if you have a side job along your studies.
