🚀 Making FemTech Work for Everyone

Let’s be real: a lot of women’s health technologies are still built with just one type of user in mind. Think cisgender, English speaking, digitally savvy, living in a high income country.

That might work for some, but it leaves far too many people out.

Older women. Disabled people. LGBTQ+ communities. Migrants. People of colour. Anyone facing barriers around language, literacy, or connectivity.

Health tech should work for all of us, not just the easiest box to tick. So we’re asking a big question:

What would it take for FemTech to truly be inclusive?

💡 The plan

Over the next few months, we’ll be digging into that question with a new community project. Here’s the plan so far:

🌟 An online event to spark conversation and highlight where FemTech is hitting the mark and where it is not.

🌍 A global open call for FemTech companies to share their stories. What’s worked, what hasn’t, and what they are learning along the way.

🎤 Follow up conversations with companies who are trying to do things differently, so we can capture their lessons in detail.

📝 A collaborative workshop where community voices, designers, researchers and users will shape the final output together.

📖 A practical guide called “Making Your FemTech Work for All Women” that will be packed with tips, prompts and case studies to help health tech be more inclusive from day one.

🙌 We need you

Big projects need brilliant people. That’s where our volunteer crew comes in.

The project has been kickstarted by our amazing Specialist Network Leads, Bimpe Lawal, Sabrina Davis and Donna Williamson. Now we’re building a small but mighty volunteer team to help bring it to life.

There are lots of ways to get involved. You might:

✨ Help us plan and run our online event, from behind the scenes organisation to welcoming people on the day.

✨ Support outreach for the global open call, sharing it far and wide and making sure it reaches different corners of the FemTech world.

✨ Chat with companies and contributors, helping us collect and shape their stories into something powerful.

✨ Join the creative process for the guide, whether that’s brainstorming ideas, reviewing drafts, or adding your own lived experience.

✨ Pitch in with community comms, social media, or copywriting if that’s your thing.

✨ Or simply bring your perspective and curiosity, which is just as valuable.

This isn’t about being a health tech expert or giving up hours you don’t have. A small weekly commitment is all we need. If you value inclusion and equity and want to help build something together, you’re exactly who we’re looking for.

We are particularly keen to hear from students and staff at UCL who are curious about equity, design, or health innovation. This is a great chance to get practical experience, connect with a vibrant community, and see how ideas around inclusion translate into real projects.

Volunteering with OHT is flexible and fun. You will meet amazing people, learn along the way, and help shape something that could shift the culture of FemTech for good.

🌱 What makes this possible

This project is powered by the OHT Women’s Health Specialist Network and made possible thanks to funding from UCL Innovation & Enterprise, who are supporting us to make women’s health tech more inclusive, practical and accessible to all.
